Blue smoke

‘Blue smoke’ is not a promo for cigarettes nor would I encourage smoking. I just always wanted to photograph something with smoke. If you ever watched a candle go out or an incense stick burn, you would’ve noticed the beautiful curving patterns it creates in the air. If you put your hand into it, it would entwine around your fingers like some alien living creature… So, that was an inspiration for the shoot.

I’ve asked my (very cool and talented) musician/actor friend Gordon Delap to pop into the studio while I was working with another model. He waited patiently for hours while me and my lovely French subject were working out the ways of lighting her face and fixing her hair. Finally, I realised that he had to go and I had about twenty minutes to change the lights and do everything else.

The whole shoot lasted for just one cigarette and about two songs. It was probably the shortest session I’ve ever done and the longest ‘blue’ smoke I’ve seen someone have. Sometimes magical things happen when you only have a few moments to appreciate them…
